How much wood for a fireplace to last a day?
Q. We live in SW MO & the rain has turned to sleet and ice, with snow coming after that. We live out of the city limits in wooded sub. We stand a good chance of losing power. I wanted to know how much wood do I need for one whole day? I appreciate your response. I have wood outside, I just wanted to make sure I have enough.

A. I'd go ahead and buy a cord of wood. Winter is just starting and you will surely use it all before winter is over.

How do I stop wood from splintering on my cabinet doors when I'm drilling holes for new pulls?
Q. I am first using a smaller bit then a larger one but the wood is still splintering. I have also put tape on the back but that didn't work. They are not real wood doors but MFD with a laminate wood looking top.

A. Clamp a piece of wood or MFD to the side you don't want to splinter. Use a sharp bit, spin it fast and use light pressure. As a general note, when you drill a pilot hole look at the final bit you are going to use. Now select a pilot drill that is approximately the same diameter as the web in the final drill. Good luck.

What type of wood should I put in my bearded dragons vivarium?
Q. I'm really confused at what type of wood is best to put in my bearded dragon vivarium. I understand that some wood will not support their weight as they grow but I just don't know which wood that is. I'm buying most of my stuff online and the options are grapevine, mopani and savannah? If there's any other I should be considering let me know?

A. I don't really think that you should put wood in the cage, because it's expensive and there are other substances that are cheaper and better for your bearded dragon. Here is a care sheet that is very helpful and person has a lot of experience on it. Substrate: or baby to juvenile Bearded Dragons I prefer and recommend either newspaper, paper towels, butcher paper or reptile carpet. These choices are cheap, easy to clean and hold no health risks to your animal. If using reptile carpet the stuff that looks and feels like grass is the best. The felt kind has little loops of fabric that may catch the nails of your Dragon and cause injury. DO NOT use sand, shavings or any other loose substrate for baby to juvenile Beardies. They can be very… [cont.]

A. Get a q-tip and dab it into some paint thinner. Then simply apply to newspaper, but a very small amount, and the paper should peal off. Then you can touch up your paint job, if necessary! Best of luck!

A. You need to stay away from Cedar and Pine. Both of which are poisonous to reptiles. Some people argue that pine is an ok material to use but others have proof that it can make the animal sick. So why risk it? Any wood but Pine and Cedar no matter how many layers of protectant you use over it. Good luck building the enclosure

Does wood paneling in a home increase or decrease the value of the home?
Q. I live/own a home that has "good" wood paneling in the living room. It makes the room darker than I like. I would like to cover/replace this paneling with drywall or something to brighten it up. My parents on the other hand say that the "good" wood paneling increases the value of the home. Is there any proof of this or is it their opinion? Yes, the house was built in the 60's and hasn't had much of any upgrades (grandmothers house that was inherited). Thanks for your response.

A. Paneling will decrease the value. Some people like it but it is not considered to be updated.

Whats a way to treat wood to preserve it and to kill possible bugs?
Q. I'm looking to treat a piece of wood I found in the woods. Its the bark of a bug eaten tree and I want to kill the bugs and treat the wood to preserve it. Whats the best way to do this?
Asked by BetterRedThanDead - Sun Sep 9 21:31:37 2007 - Do It Yourself (DIY) - 2 Answers - Comments

A. If you really want to presserve the wood... Try to treat it with "SOLIGNUM" as far away from your home. The risk of bringing in the bugs from the bark may spread to your home. After that you can varnish the wood this will double protect and kills the bug that is left... but still if its not very important just leave it be or burn it to prevent spread.

Q. I am going to put a fitting on deck on the outside of my boat. I will need to put a thin strip of wood (1/4" x 1" x 8") under the fitting. It will be outside exposed to the weather half of the year. I want it to be strong and weather/water resistant. I can paint it if that would help. What wood would you use? I'm considering mahogany.

A. So, you are making a bedding plate, not a backer plate? Use either philippine mahogany or white oak. Both of these are readily available at any speciality lumber store, and are extremely strong and rot resistant without any treatment. ... Just a note- white oak, if untreated will turn black when exposed to moisture and the elements, while philippine mahogany becomes a silvery grey colour.

A. Well it's difficult to answer with the information you provide. If you are doing a subjective sculpture, using subtractive technique (starting with a block and removing everything that doesn't look like the subject) I recommend Bass Wood. It's very stable (commonly used for picture framing) uniform and easy to work. Beech would be a very poor choice for this. It has a ropey grain and will be difficult to work as will hard woods like Walnut, Maple, Rosewood, and Ebony (few woods are harder than Ebony which is considered one of the "Iron Wood" species. I would also stay away from Poplar. It is very common now days because it grows fast. As a result of the rapid growth there is a lot of stress in the timber so it is not stable. If… [cont.]

A. I'm not sure I can visualize your project, but Western Cedar would be a good fit. It's highly resistant to insect/fungal attack and is one of the stronger cedars. It's also pretty light weight. I would recommend putting a coat of polyurethane on any type of wood you put outside, just as a general precaution and to help extend the life of the wood. You could also up the weight a little and go with Locust or Walnut.

How to paint a table from light wood to dark wood color?
Q. I have coffee and dinning tables I want to repaint. They are both in natural light wood. I want them to be dark wood color. They are varnished with a glossy finish. I want to paint them that way, that the wood would look like natural dark wood, not like a heavy painted wall. I need a list of things needed to do this job. Thanks a lot!
Asked by iriska - Tue Feb 16 13:25:04 2010 - Do It Yourself (DIY) - 7 Answers - Comments

A. Your not going to be able to accomplish that look w/ paint. Paint won't stick to varnish at all. For one the glossy finish is varnish, & you need to use a solvent to get all of that off before you start. Once you've accomplished that, lightly sand the table & legs. You'll need stain to accomplish the look you want. There are a lot of different shades.Once you find the color you want, brush on the stain, then wipe it off. You can only do so much at a time. But if you really want to make your tables look nice, this is the steps you will have to take. You can try another method, but I don't guarantee the outcome. You could just sand the varnish & then try the paint, but to tell you the truth, paint will look tacky.

A. I would go to a local hardware store and tell them what you are building and let them assist you in deciding what materials to use. Also, do you have some printed blueprints for it or are you trying to design it yourself? If you have blueprints, maybe the designer of the plan should recommend what materials to use.

A. Try using Brewster's Paintable Wallpaper, it may be left unpainted for a clean fresh look, or painted a solid color for drama. Apply additional highlight colors to raised design for a multi-toned effect. If the grooves in your paneling are 1/4 inch deep or more, hide them by filling them with caulk. Wipe away the overflow of caulk by running a putty knife along the groove. Once caulk is dry, prime the paneling with a stain-blocking latex primer. Let dry completely. Coat walls with an acrylic-emulsion sizing or one recommended by the liner manufacturer. Sizing creates a rough surface to help the liner adhere. A heavy-duty wallpaper liner, available where wallpaper is sold, is the secret to the project's success. Hang the liner horizontally.… [cont.]
