Wood is an organic material; in the strict sense it is produced as secondary xylem in the stems of trees (and other woody plants). In a living tree it conducts water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues, and has a support function, enabling woody plants to reach large sizes or to stand up for themselves. However, wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber.

People have used wood for millennia for many purposes, primarily as a fuel or as a construction material for making houses, tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artworks, and paper. Wood can be dated by carbon dating and in some species by dendrochronology to make inferences about when a wooden object was created. The year-to-year variation in tree-ring widths and isotopic abundances gives clues to the prevailing climate at that time.

Formation

Wood, in the strict sense, is yielded by trees, which increase in diameter by the formation, between the existing wood and the inner bark, of new woody layers which envelop the entire stem, living branches, and roots. Technically this is known as secondary growth; it is the result of cell division in the vascular cambium, a lateral meristem, and subsequent expansion of the new cells.

Is it safe to put wood in a regular oven to make wood oven pizza at home?
Q. Is it safe, or will the wood catch on fire? Please help!!! The oven is a regular kitchen oven. Also what type of wood should be used?
Asked by Koke - Mon May 26 20:38:45 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "wood oven pizza" is more commonly referred to as 'Wood Fired Pizza" > If I am guessing correctly, you are referring to the same kind of pizza that places like Sammy's and California Pizza Kitchen make in a big indoor wood BURNING oven. That is the actual meaning of Wood Fired Pizza. It is done in a large oven lined with firebricks (or similar construction) and burns various kinds of wood to add a smoky flavor to the pizza. NO you cannot do this in a home oven, unless you plan on making enough for the local fire dept. to chow down after they (hopefully) save your house. One of the other answers mentioned a pizza stone, those are good to use in an oven as they help crisp the bottom of the pizza. You can do it on an outdoor BBQ grill, [cont.]

What type of wood do you find to be most pleasantly smelling?
Q. I have an old desk that I can considering replacing the top of and I intend to build a few flat simple desks out of wood. Perhaps either factually or in your opinion, which type of wood is most preferred in terms of scent? Thank you.

A. If price is not too much a factor, Sandalwood is famously fragrant, suitable for use as a desktop, and has a tight swirled grain that is beautiful. But scent is highly subjective: what I like you may not care for. If you want a nice desktop it would really be worth your time to find and visit a lumber yard with a good assortment of woods. Also, many soft woods, wonderfully fragrant, are not really suitable for a desk top. You will need a fairly hard wood to stand up to daily use. As others have pointed out, however, when finished with varnish, lacquer, or the like, (which would protect the top) the fragrance is sealed in. Don't be tempted to leave the underside unfinished either. Real wood is hygroscopic and if one side is… [cont.]

What type of rug backing is best for wood (engineered wood) floors? Do some backings hurt the wood floor?
Q. I have heard that rubber backed throw rugs are bad for wood floors. And I am purchasing some rugs for my new home, which has wood floors.
Asked by arturogondaro - Mon Jul 28 19:26:05 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It isn't scratching you need to be afraid of, with rubberized backing. It is the rubber breaking down and either crumbling, or, if anything greasy got on it, it would turn to a sticky, gluey mess. Look for rugs made of natural fibers, either cotton, wool, or silk. They wear well, and won't damage your nice hardwood floors. We have wool rugs on hardwood.
