A gift registry is a particular type of wish list. When someone compiles a list of items they desire and then hands it out to family and friends, they have created a wish list. These lists can contain items from many different sources. A registry, on the other hand, is limited to the stock of a given retailer. The retailer will maintain the list for the registrant and make sure that items are removed from the list as they are purchased. Retailers will often make this list public to anyone who asks for it and will not divulge who has purchased the registered items.

Goals

A managed registry system has several goals.

  1. It facilitates communication between gift givers and receivers. Recipients can compile a wish list and make it available to anyone who will present them with a gift. Gift givers can then be certain that they are purchasing items that the receiver will appreciate.
  2. A registry can prevent gift givers from duplicating gifts when it is managed efficiently. To accomplish this, the retailer should remove each item from the registry as it is purchased.
  3. The registry process should allow gift purchasers to be discrete about what they have bought. This is so the person receiving the gifts will not know who purchased which items until they are surprised at the time of gift giving.
  4. The registry system should benefit the retailer by bringing customers to their store where they can purchase products that the merchant carries

Which are the nicest stores in Dublin for a wedding gift registry?
Q. I am getting married and I'd like to find a nice, quality store for my gift registry. Since I'll only get married once, I'd like to go beyond the likes of Debbenhams, House of Fraser and register somewhere "nicer" but I don't know where! Recently I've also found out names of good brands I've never heard of like Decco, WMF and Newbrige. Can anyone tell me what stores carry these brands or advise on more good brands and stores? Many thanks! I just checked out Kilkenny store Dublin, but they only have crystal, jewelry or pottery and I'm looking for kitchen and home ware. There is also a website called weddingwishlist.ie that has a whole bunch of retailers, but I've talked to them and their stores just don't convince me. Any other advise,… [cont.]

How did you handle your gift registry?
Q. Were your guests informed with a formal notice/online, or word of mouth? Also, did you put a basket next to he sign in book for anyone who wanted to give cards/money? I want to be as classy as possible as far as gifts go. I do not expect gifts at all, but does it make it awkward for people If I don't register, as far as them not knowing not to get? What did you do?

A. i registered at Bed Bath & Beyond and guests were informed through my mother in law. I've received wedding invitations with and without registry information.I honestly prefer to have that because I really do want to get the couple something they want and they need. But I heard that some people don't like that (not sure why parents telling other guests about the registry is okay but sending out the registry info is not...). Since a lot of people are against the idea of sending the info with the invitation, I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and just followed what other people told me; let other people spread the words. Most of the guests at my wedding got me something from the registry or a giftcard. but there were a few people who… [cont.]

what would be good thing for a wedding gift registry?
Q. We have cups and plate sets and what normal people do. What would be a good thing to get? My cousin got a hot dog warm machine when she got married because she was out of ideas and i don't want one trust me. What would be good things to ask for?

A. just because you're out of ideas, don't just put random things on the registry that you don't actually need. that's impolite for your guests. think of household items like silverware, glasses, small appliances, towels, linens, anything you need for your home. if you have an old comforter you want to replace for example, pick out a new comforter set for your registry.
