A clock is an instrument used to indicate, measure, keep, and co-ordinate time. The word clock is derived ultimately (via Dutch, Northern French, and Medieval Latin) from the Celtic words clagan and clocca meaning "bell". For horologists and other specialists the term clock continues to mean exclusively a device with a striking mechanism for announcing intervals of time acoustically, by ringing a bell, a set of chimes, or a gong. A silent instrument lacking such a mechanism has traditionally been known as a timepiece. In general usage today a "clock" refers to any device for measuring and displaying the time. Watches and other timepieces that can be carried on one's person are often distinguished from clocks.

The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need to consistently measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units: the day; the lunar month; and the year. Devices operating on several different physical processes have been used over the millennia, culminating in the clocks of today.

Q. why everytime is shows the time 10:10 in the advertised watches and clocks?

A. I've actually seen watches advertised with hands in different positions. And the reason many companies do that is so that you can see the individuals hands on analog watches and see the differences in detail and length between the two. It's the most aesthetically pleasing option while keeping the image symmetrical for showing the difference between the hands when you consider how awkward the watch would look at 3:15, 6:00, 4:40, and the other options.

Why don't modern clocks and watches work by clockwork.?
Q. Clockwork was originally carbon friendly, didn't need batteries or plugs, it seems to me that technology has gone backwards.

A. Modern clocks and watches don't use mechanical (clockwork) power sources because they are affected by vibration and temperature thus reducing their accuracy electronics can be stabilised against temperature variations and are unaffected by vibration. in theory it is possible to produce a hybrid timepiece where electrical power is provided by a "clockwork" mechanism but the timekeeping part is electronic thus removing the need for batteries etc, whilst retaining accuracy..
