A semiconductor is a material that has an electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator, that is, generally in the range 10 siemens per centimeter to 10 S/cm. Devices made from semiconductor materials are the foundation of modern electronics, including radio, computers, telephones, and many other devices. Semiconductor devices include the various types of transistor, solar cells, many kinds of diodes including the light-emitting diode, the silicon controlled rectifier, and digital and analog integrated circuits. Solar photovoltaic panels are large semiconductor devices that directly convert light energy into electrical energy. An external electrical field may change a semiconductor's resistivity. In a metallic conductor, current is carried by the flow of electrons. In semiconductors, current can be carried either by the flow of electrons or by the flow of positively-charged "holes" in the electron structure of the material. Common semiconducting materials are crystalline solids but amorphous and liquid semiconductors are known, such as mixtures of arsenic, selenium and tellurium in a variety of proportions. They share with better known semiconductors intermediate conductivity and a rapid variation of conductivity with temperature but lack the rigid crystalline structure of conventional semiconductors such as silicon and so are relatively insensitive to impurities and radiation damage. Silicon is used to create most semiconductors commercially. Dozens of other materials are used, including germanium, gallium arsenide, and silicon carbide. A pure semiconductor is often called an “intrinsic” semiconductor. The conductivity, or ability to conduct, of common semiconductor materials can be drastically changed by adding other elements, called “impurities” to the melted intrinsic material and then allowing the melt to solidify into a new and different crystal. This process is called "doping". From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How is a semiconductor different from a conductor? Q. Can you explain how a semiconductor different from a conductor? Asked by Thick Skin - Sat Apr 7 17:04:19 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A semiconductor's conductivity can be controlled over a wide range. They are similar to insulators in their structure, and like insulators have very few electrons that are capable of gaining enough energy to jump the band gap, which is necessary for conduction. Semiconductors and insulators, in the absence of electric fields, have very similar electrical properties. Semiconductors, however, have a much smaller band gap, allowing for many other methods (in addition to temperature) to control their electrical conductivity. Wikipedia has a good overview... Answered by Fizz_Assist - Sat Apr 7 17:23:48 2007 What are the best sites to search for jobs in the semiconductor industry in canada? Q. I am a software engineer with 10 years of experience in the semiconductor field. I am looking for a job in Canada (BC preferred). Do you know what are the best sites for search for such jobs? Thanks, Bernie Asked by berniefro - Thu Aug 21 10:05:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Since the semiconductor industry is not that large in Canada, why don't you try to search company by company instead of search sites. If you insist, well, I guess Monster.com is a good start, many HR people use it. Answered by ftc - Sun Aug 24 14:47:05 2008 Field Service Engineer move from semiconductor to medical devices?
Q. Looking for a little advice from anyone in the medical devices industry. I currently work as an FSE in photolithography for the semiconductor industry and would like to transition into the medical devices field. I work in the central Massachusetts area and was wondering if anyone knows of some good recruiting firms to assist with the change. I understand getting into the medical devices field is somewhat difficult (seems like you have to know someone first). Also any advice you all have would be appreciated. Thanks. Asked by Wayne - Mon Nov 9 15:26:07 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi, I do not have a specific contact in the Medical Devices industry, but this directory might help, it is specifically for the Medical Devices field and it is filled with only companies that are Business to Business. Hope this helps! Answered by Linny - Thu Nov 12 15:34:07 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "semiconductor" Chip Sales Set for Modest Growth in 2010
