What are the essentials for a day of boating on the lake?
Q. I am going boating tomorrow and want to know what are some items I should pack? Any suggestions are helpful

A. Here is the list of importance: Two changes of clothing (in case somehow you get your primary clothes soaked.) Swimwear (duh...) Sunscreen (Very High SPF, recommend Bullfrog sunscreen) Sunglasses and protective hat. Durable aqua sandals or aqua shoes (Avoid flip flops because they do not protect your toes or feet should you trip and fall). My rule of thumb is, if you can't run safely in your shoes for the water, don't wear em. Two thick large towels Find out if drinks will be provided, if not remember to bring a cooler small enough to hold what you need and nothing else. Beach travel bag or I recommend a duffel bag. A. Any resident of the state or person owning real property or a boat required to be registered or numbered in the state must obtain a Safe Boating Certificate (SBC) or Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation (CPWO) before operating any vessel required to be registered or numbered. Owner/operators of documented vessels or out-of-state registered vessels (not personal watercraft) may use Connecticut waters for no more than 60 days in a calendar year without obtaining a SBC or CPWO. As a beginner, how can I get started with boating with nobody to teach me?
Q. I have no boating experience and don't know anyone who even owns a boat. I would like to buy a used boat on craigslist and start taking it out on the water but I'd really like to know what I'm doing and how to test out a boat before buying it. How can I get started with this and make sure I'm not overlooking anything?

A. I suggest (before you buy anything, of course) you visit some Marinas in your area. But before you go snooping around, go introduce your self to the people that own or run the Marina and basically tell them what you just told us. With any luck at all, they will hook you up with someone that will give you an introduction to boats & boating. In addition, many Marinas off boating & sailing lessons. Usually an introduction lesson is either free or only cost a small "introductory" token fee ($20.00 or so). You don't mention a price range... but if it is a decent amount (say $10,000 or more) then if I were in your shoes - I would go to a "certified boat broker".
