I set up a wireless network and now it is showing up with multiple listings?
Q. When I search for a network, the network I set up is listed several times. It will be listed as network, network2, network3. I only set up the network once. Is this a problem? Is it some sort of security risk? The network is hidden and security enabled. I am not that computer savvy and was concerned that these variations on my network have appeared. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

A. This happened to me a few years back - turns out it was the neighbor's kid trying to hack my network by using the same SSID. His network wasn't secured, so I logged in to his router and reset the SSID to something rude. Problem solved.

How do I network a bunch of computers already sharing an internet connection?
Q. My computers are all successfully sharing a dsl internet connection via a wireless router. But I can't figure out how to get them to see each other on a file sharing network, What am I missing? No single computer can see any other computers, but they can all use the dsl connection. What gives? I've networked the old fashioned way before so what am I missing?
Asked by kmarai - Sat Dec 20 23:16:07 2008 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments
A. The faster/easier way to get from one computer to another is to just go to start>run, type \computername, hit ok, and it will show all the shared files/printers avaliable on that computer. If you would really like to go the long browsing way just make sure each computer is in the same workgroup here: rightclick on my computer and go to properties go to computer name click change enter your workgroup name/make sure it is correct hit ok on everything (including restart) All of the computers should now appear in the same workgroup in my network places.

How do you disable the network chip on a motherboard so you can install a network card?
Q. This computer is using Win 98 se. I cannot find the name of the chip on the motherboard so therefore cannot find the drivers for the network chip. I have a network card with everything with it I like to put in it.

A. Windows 98 SE doesn't have a problem with two network cards, so you could just have two of them, but if you really wanted to disable the onboard one, you could either do that in the device manager or the motherboard bios

How do I network a Suse installed machine with other computers, specifically Red hat Linux?
Q. How do I network a Suse installed machine with other computers, specifically Red hat Linux? This is for a school project, and I can't find any pages that tell how to network a Suse to other computers except how to use a printer.
Asked by Shrander - Mon Sep 15 09:44:54 2008 - Computer Networking - 3 Answers - Comments
A. Probably because of the fact that all Linux flavors share one thing in common. They were designed to network out of the box so to speak. Windows and Mac both did this as an afterthought. There isn't a version of Linux that can't network. By default the OS install for SUSE should install networking and enable it. You should not have to intervene in the process.

How could you connect to a wireless network but your computer does not detect it?
Q. I have a windows vista and windows 7 on my laptop and for some reason it does not detect wireless networks. I already have a wireless network set up from previous time but it does not show any wireless networks on the computer. Its like when you click the icon currently connected to which is after the battery icon and before the volume icon no networks are shown. How do i solve this problem?
Asked by aranvir j - Wed Apr 14 20:30:26 2010 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Try turning off/on the router and try to connect again. If not try manually entering in the router info such as the ssid and router ip address...click the wireless network icon>connect or disconnect>setup a wireless connection or network see if that detects it. Also check that your wireless card/dongle is working properly.

What would the addressing be in a network with multiple networks?
Q. For instance, say I had a Small Office Home Office (SOHO) and I have my modem connected to a switch that connects to two different routers. One router for my home network and one router for my office network. I want to prevent the workers in the office from accessing the home network. Say there are 3 computers connected to the home network and 4 computers connected to the business network. What would the addressing scheme look like?
Asked by Justin - Thu Apr 29 05:37:56 2010 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments
A. The setup you describe won't work. You can only have one device connected to your modem, two routers won't work. Also, which network is the switch supposed to be on? The way you have it setup, it's not on the home network or the office network. The best way to do it would likely be like this: modem office_router home_router Connect office machines to the office router. Connect the home router's Internet/WAN port to one of the office router's LAN ports. Connect the modem to the office router's Internet/WAN port. Connect the switch to either router's LAN port depending on which network you want the switch to be on. This way, the office network will provide the home router with Internet access. Office machines won't be able to access the home… [cont.]

How do I go about my wirelles network after installing windows 7?
Q. Last night I installed Windows 7 on my pc. I have a wireless network using dlink-N router and dlink usb network adapter. What do I have to do to use the same network I had? Do I have to reinstall everything or only my usb network adapter? Or something else...? Thank you.

A. You need to install the Windows 7 version of the driver for the USB D link N network adapter. Should be available from the D-link web site. Everything else should remain the same, except you will need to re-enter your wireless security key if you put one on the router.

How do I network my computers so i can share printers?
Q. I have a pc running vista and another running windows 7 using the same wireless network. I want to network them so i can then network printers. When i go to add a wireless device, they do not find each other. Can someone give me instructions on how to network them?
Asked by 1234321 - Wed Jun 23 22:10:59 2010 - Computer Networking - 3 Answers - Comments
A. There's no need to find the computers if both are already connected to the same wireless router. In a sense, they are already networked. What you need to do is plug the printer in one of the computers, and setup printer sharing on that computer. Both computers need to have the printer driver software installed first. To setup printer sharing in Vista (if you decide to plug the printer on the Vista machine) -> To setup printer sharing in Windows 7 (if you decide to plug the printer on the Win 7 machine) -> To add the shared printer to the other computer simply look for the printer on the network using Windows Explorer.

Q. Why I must go through modem to connect to the internet? Can I connect to internet just by network card? If modem is like a converter, then what about network card? A. Broadband Modem: Like you say is a converter which converts the signal. A broadband modem will convert your cable service signal into digital, where as a DSL will use your phone lines. Signal conversion happens at the modem but not network card. Network Card: Now your computer needs to talk to this converted signal, and the interface is network card. No, network card does not convert the signal. Just like you need a monitor to display, network card is a communication device for your computer for the high-speed internet. Yes, you can connect to the internet using network card, assuming your home/office has set up the connections and you have rj-45 drops at the location. A typical setup for a home/medium office would be Cable ->>Cable… [cont.]

A. If your mom has a router, you will need the cable + switch to connect those. If your mom only has a modem, you will need a router on her end, the cable and a switch. You could run 3 wires for your stuff, but switches are cheap.

How do I network multiple computers to a printer?
Q. I need to network 12 computers to one printer. They run on Windows XP. I haven't networked a printer before so I don't know what all details to give. If anyone can give me a clue as to what to do I would appriciate it.
Asked by Amy - Tue Nov 6 10:51:48 2007 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments
A. 1st thing you need to do is right click the my computer icon and go to properties and then computer name and make sure all of the computers are on the same network name. You can change this to anyname you wish. Then the printer (with drivers and all) must be installed on 1 computer. If the 12 computers are on a network already then it is very simple you have to go to start /settings/printers and then select install printer and choose the network printer to install. If they are not already networked together then you will need a router to connect the computers together. You will also need a network hub if you wish to network more that 12 computers together. It pretty straight forward to do you can find you more @

Q. I am on a home network utilizing Fi OS. Both my PC and Laptop utilize wireless connections (as do two other computers), with one main computer connected to the Fi OS router. I want to share folders between my PC and Laptop that the others cannot access or see at all, so that they do not know the network exists. Can someone recommend a good website to give me step by step instructions?

A. All you have to do is name your network something that the other computers are not and your network will not be seen by them.

Why is network security so important to have?
Q. Hi all, I am asking for as many reasons as possible that you can all think of as to why is network security necessary? Why do we spend so much time and money on network security? And lastly, what are some specific examples? All feedback, answers, and comments will be gladly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A. Network Security is Password Protected security.. Security software for your PC is all about scanning your computer for potential threats.. The best in PC security is known to use a Proxy..that's when your vendor actually lies between your device and the internet--the software--can be just applications to provide back-up..but in all actual predictions--the vendor is filtering your PC-use.. === Network security would be..OS based security..mostly just about Password and Configuration.. === Cost..I spend about 50-dollars per year on actual internet security..useing 2-desktops.. === I use un-limited internet access..and really never have any serious problems.. Some moments do require a internet connection to operate correctly.. === I don't do- [cont.]

How can I network 3 computers from an ordinary network cable without a switch?
Q. I have a Cat 5e cable, RJ45 connectors and 3 computers with network cards. Is it possible for me to network these three computers without using a switch or a router? If the switch has a simple circuit, I can make it my own. Thank you for helping me on this.

Why is my computer connecting to a different WPA2 network?
Q. I have my own network that my computer will connect to, but before it connects to my network it connects to a linksys network that I dont know the password for. This linksys network is a security enabled network, and my computer knows the password but I dont. Is it bad that my computer is connecting to this other network? If so, how do I get it to stop? And can someone explain how or why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

A. Somehow you saved automatically connect this network. You need to remove from the connection properties and then, scan the frequency of your wifi and connect and save auto. Good luck if you do not know let us know the OS you are using.
