“Through the transformation and modification of historical portraits, I want to deprive them of their obviousness and disrupt the familiar order. I want to create a new story based on them.” The artist elaborates on the creation of her first solo exhibition in New York.

Ahead of the exhibition, McCartney and Joshua Chuang, director of photography at Gagosian, met up at Griffin Editions in Brooklyn, New York, to reflect on the prints featured in the show.
In conjunction with the exhibition Adriana Varejão: Don’t Forget, We Come From the Tropics at the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, New York, Laura Dias Leite produced a video directed by Luisa Marques in which the artist discusses the genesis of the show. Curated by Doig, and taking Balthus’s 1933 painting of the same title as its point of departure, the show is a portrait of urban life seen through the eyes of painters.
