Rearview Mirror, an exhibition of recently rediscovered photographs by Paul McCartney presented in Beverly Hills and London, features thirty-six works composed of images taken between December 1963 and February 1964. It presents a rare opportunity to acquire selected photographs—including some previously unseen—from McCartney’s personal archive and is the first time he has made signed editions of his photographs available.
Born in Liverpool and baptized in the clubs of Hamburg, The Beatles started 1963 poised to break out of obscurity. As they achieved their first hit records in England and toured the country with their distinctive look, irreverent attitudes, and infectious melodies, momentum began to build. By that fall, especially after their performance on Sunday Night at the London Palladium, growing reports of frenzied hordes of teenage girls screaming, fainting, and in a general state of delirium whenever and wherever the band played inspired a new word to describe the phenomenon—Beatlemania.
To chronicle his rapidly changing reality, Paul McCartney acquired a 35mm Pentax camera as Beatlemania swept across Britain and started to ripple outward. Taken in the pivotal months during which The Beatles emerged as global icons—then lost for half a century—McCartney’s photographs offer a vivid firsthand account of the camaraderie, self-reflection, astonishment, and joy he and his bandmates experienced. Together these photographs constitute a newly indispensable perspective on The Beatles’ rise just as the world seemed to need them most.
Everywhere I went I just took pictures.
