How does submarine hull thickness scale with its diameter?
Q. How does submarine hull thickness scale with its diameter? If the diameter doubles, would the thickness of the hull have to increase proportionally with the surface area of the hull to withstand the water pressure at the same depth? Or can the same depth be reached with twice the diameter but same hull thickness?

A. to keep the same compressive stress in the material of the hull, you would want to increase the thickness proportionally, double the diameter, double the thickness, you can think of the compressive stress by cutting the hull in half.. -> ( I ) <- The total (net) force is the pressure times the length times the diameter which must equal something like the compressive stress of the hull times the length times the thickness... to keep the compressive stress the same, the thickness and diameter must be directly proportional

What size diesel pump is necessary to power a 20-ft displacement hull jet boat?
Q. I am building commuter boats at the moment for the Otago Harbour in southern NZ, the more the merrier. Latest idea: Get a displacement hull and power it with a diesel pump, to get a jet drive (good for crossing the sandbanks at low tide, and to allow the boat to sit on the mud if the water recedes). But just what kind of pump would work? I need to get the displacement boat up to about 8 knots.

A. The idea is good only problem is the pickups on the bottom of the boat an the pump will suck the sand an mud destroying the pump & housing.This is the issue with jet drives. Think about arnesen surface drive as there not under the boats bottom??
