It's been a while since I have had Algebra so double check this. But a polynomial function would be something like x-squared + 2x -1 or something. It would be something raised to a power of something descending down to no variables. It could be broken into a form such as (x-2)(x+1) in which case you would use the FOIL (First Outer Inner Last) order of multiplication to put it back into a formula. Q. I'm supposed to derive the total cost curve from from the production function but I don't exactly know the difference between them. Is the total cost curve the derivative of the production function or something? If the production function has the same of an upside down parabola with the peak at (2,3) then what will the production function look like in general shape? And it is normally convex like indifference curve. The production function will be maximized when the ratio of marginal productivity is equal to the ratio of input prices. The cost function is the relation between total cost and output. The total cost curve can be normally minimized based on output.
