What is the best free software (not demo only!) to use for family tree charting and related genealogical work?
Q. I used smart draw but it's a demo only, I got a pdf print before the expiry but I don't want to do all that work again many times over. I can't really justify paying the $200 for the software when I know freebies are out there. Do any of you genealogists or family research buffs use a decent freeware or shareware program for your graphic tree-charting?

A. There are several that are available. I would avoid the PAF file unless you belong to the LDS Church or intend on becoming a member. There is a lot of things on it that are specific to the Church and have nothing to do with non-LDS genealogical research. You can purchase Family Tree Maker (FTM), Legacy or Roots Magic, which seem to be the current popular ones for less than $40. FMT is affiliated with Ancestry, however, I have found that most serious or professional Genealogists seem to be using Legacy or Roots Magic. Either program cost about the same. I purchased both programs at a Genealogical convention for $10.00 a piece, but I think they are about $30 on line. All three provide about the same charts and are pretty straight forward and… [cont.]

How to check what files the DEMO software has installed in my computer?

A. To properly setup and package software for distribution via Active Directory or SMS would probably take at least an hour - more like a few hours - for EACH title. It makes sense to do an AD software install if you have 15-20+ clients... but for 6, you're probably better off with going to each machine and manually doing it. If you have 6 identical machines and you want the software on each to be identical, you could setup ONE system completely, then create an image using Acronis (www.acronis.com) or similar product and then put that image onto each system - just remember to use Sysprep right before you create the image so you don't end up with SID conflicts.

why do 2 computers that are exactly the same with same hardware and software have different processor speeds?
Q. I work in an IT department at my church and we have around a dozen Acer Aspire 3000 laptops that we let the community use. These computers have the same hardware and the same basic software but for some reason around half have 800 MHz of processor speed and the others have 1.6 GHz of processor speed. How i check this is right click on my computer and view properties in case your wondering. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Is there a software that can store all my yahoo messenger archives even when i'm logging to other computers?
Q. When i'm logging in to my yahoo messenger to the other computers, i checked my archives but couldn't find my history messages in my own computer here at home. I know recent archives are only stored in the computer that you use presently. Not only is it easy, but you can direct line (hook the instruments up directly to your computer) for production. On top of that, there are thousands of effects you can add to the instrumental recordings. You can make an out of tune in tune to any key you want. Same goes for drums...you can take a crappy sounding drumset and make it sound professional in the matter of minutes (even the paper-punch sound you hear from metal). Q. I want to use my laptop to record demos for a new band. I don't know how to start, tho. I'd like to know what hardware and/or software I need to record & mix tracks. Don't worry about being insultingly basic - I ain't a computer genius by any stretch of the imagination! Any advice would be great!

A. Hook yourself up with Cool Edit Pro 2.1 - a monkey can produce a professional CD with this software. Not only is it easy, but you can direct line (hook the instruments up directly to your computer) for production. On top of that, there are thousands of effects you can add to the instrumental recordings. You can make an out of tune in tune to any key you want. Same goes for drums...you can take a crappy sounding drumset and make it sound professional in the matter of minutes (even the paper-punch sound you hear from metal). Trust me on this one...I've been using this program for over a year now, and I won't use anything else. It's simply the most efficient program out there right now, even more so than Cakewalk and Fruity Loops!
