A. HP Open View will do what you need. There are several programs with "Auto Network Discovery". To write your own you would start with a program like Wireshark to listen for the multicast and broadcast packets from the workstations, printers, hubs, switches, routers and build a network topology diagram. Start with Wireshark ... Wireshark r is available under the GNU General Public License.

A. you need vpn software like the cisco vpn client. then you need to identify the traffic types that will be using the vpn tunnel, this is typically referred to as the "interesting" traffic. once you have identified the interesting traffic, you need to agree upon a method of security or "security association" to use. MD5 is commonly used. the security association encrypts the traffic via a pre-shared key known only by the hosts that are parties to the vpn.

How could you start a private network for your computers at home without getting another ethernet cable?
Q. If I had lots of computers and laptops laying around in my house and they're all on the internet, how can I start a private network with each? I don't have any extra ethernet cables either. I have the new AT&T internet and a couple spare old modems. Can I use those to start a private network just by switching the ethernet cables?
Asked by RANDALL D - Sun Feb 8 17:25:45 2009 - Computer Networking - 2 Answers - Comments

A. From all PCs an Ethernet cable goes into a router. From the router one cable goes into the modem. When the router has no switch functionality then you must attach all the Ethernet cables from the PCs into a switch in order to make the PCs reachable for each other. The switch is connected to the router (with an Ethernet cable). The router distributes the internet traffic from and to the right computer in your home.

A. Hello, if you are going to be connecting them on a network without internet, it is pretty simple. First-off, you need a Network Switch. I would go with a 5 or 8 port, just for future expansion. You will also need 3x CAT5 UTP flyleads (ethernet cables), all the above is available at your local computer store. I assume your computers all already have network cards or a built in ethernet port on the motherboard. If not, you will need to have an ethernet card installed in each machine. Then, once everything is hooked up, power up Windows and go into Network Connections, right-click on the Local Area Connection, go to TCP/IP, click on Properties, and click on Use the following IP address. At machine 1, use ip 192.168.0.1, at machine 2, 192.168.0 [cont.]

Is there software to force network computers to all display the administrator's screen?
Q. I've seen this used in classrooms before. I'm not talking about remotely controlling another computer's desktop. I'm leading software trainings, and the lab I'm using isn't projector friendly. I want to be able to force each computer in a network to display what I'm doing on my screen. Is there open source or free software for this? Can VNC do it?
Asked by Les - Wed Apr 25 13:50:24 2007 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments

A. VNC can do this but each computer would have to initiate the connection. RDP (Remote Desk Top) on Windows 2000 or XP machines can also do it.

A. first both computers will have to have a wireless card next you will need a wireless router next, on each machine you will have to run the network setup wizard in windows via start run accessories communications network setup wizard this will guide you through all the steps to create a network at the end you will be asked to make a network setup disk, you can do this and write it to a floppy then easily install it on the other machine, but i prefer to go through each step manually. after it is complete, and both machines are restarted and runnig, click my network places on the start menue and you will see the shared drives on your network. here is a helpful link

A. You set up a wireless network (for example by buying a wireless router in a computer store and installing it in your house). Then you can configure both your machines to connect to it (if you have all laptops, they usually have wireless already built into them, otherwise you can also get a router which has a few LAN ports in addition to the wireless). When all machines are on the same network you can set up file sharing on the Windows machine, and the Linux machine will be able to browse to that computer with no additional setup required (on distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora, and many more...). You do this from Linux by opening Nautilus (the default file browser on many Linuxes) and clicking the "Network" icon and browsing the… [cont.]

How can I physically connect two computers and create a "network"?
Q. Is it possible to physically connect two computers by a cable and create a "network" to, for example, play multi-player games? I know I can do so with a hub, but surely there's a way to just directly hook one up to the other and go off that, right? For clarification, I don't want to make the computers share resources, just get them to recognize the other as a separate computer and play games/transfer files like any other LAN. Possible for little money?

A. Yes you can do that. For that you need ethernet cable. And you need crossover ethernet cable. It should be connected to ethernet card on both pcs that way you can play multiplayer games.
