If Windows NT terminal came out in 1993, why were consumers stranded with the 9x codebase?
Q. Something that really bewildered me. If the Windows NT terminal was released in 1993, why were consumers left with Windows 95, 98 and then ME when the codebase was using the even-for-the-time primative 9x codebase? Why did it take 7/8 years for the NT codebase to be available for the domestic and buisness computers alike?

A. Easy, have you ever tried to do something so complex? Also, market demand was not there. The NT O/S was remarkable in its time. It added a lot of security, changes in driver model, hardware abstraction, etc. To properly use that in a non Server environment meant the all of the software, drivers, etc. had to change to work in that model. The time was required by the game providers, the standard application providers, the hardware vendors to redevelop their software to work in that environment. You have to remember that back then, the client OS (the 9x series as you call it) didn't do a lot for the average programmer so they had to develop it themselves. So, does the developer spend the time to move their software to the NT architecture… [cont.]
