How many computers can I have hooked up to my high speed internet?
Q. I have high speed internet through my phone company (zoomtown) I just bought a new computer and am giving my old computer to my brother. How to I hook both computers to the internet. Do I need to get another box for the old computer from the phone company, or do I need to to set up a wireless network on my own?

A. You can connect as many computers as you want. The "box" you refer to is the high-speed modem. That's the device that is directly connected to your ISP, and is the ONLY device directly connected. This modem is called your "gateway" to the internet. When you connect a single computer to the internet, you use an ethernet cable to connect your computer to the modem, which has a single ethernet port. However, if you have more than one computer, you can plug what's called a "hub" to the modem instead, and then plug your computers into the hub. Most hubs have 4 ports, but you can get them with 6 or 10, and even more if you look around. If you have more computers than you have ports, you can plug another hub into the… [cont.]

Can connecting another computer to my network influence the connections of the other computers?
Q. I had two computers both connected to a wireless router. Yesterday I connected a third computer to the network and, although the connection goes through for this new computer, one of the original computers now says "Limited or no connectivity" and cannot connect to the Internet. Is it possible that the new computer is using up too much bandwidth and is therefore preventing the other computer from accessing the Internet?

How do computers and electronics actually work?
Q. I know the mechanics of computers and the other parts to them and how they function but how did they get the function to function? No matter how hard I think, I can't think of how computers and other things got the function to function? Like, how did the people develop an artificial code and put it into the chips and things to allow them to function? It seems impossible but it is possible because we have it. Like, how can people put codes into metal and other non-living substances to allow them to support articifial intelligence and things? Like, people can type, use programs, access and do things on computers just because of chips and other components to computers. How and why is it possible?

A. Computers--difficult subject. It all comes down to on/off switches. On is a one (1) and off is a zero (0). Anything can be represented with enough 1s and 0s. That is called Binary code. The value of the digit multiplies by 2x for every digit to the left. 0 is zero 1 is one 10 is two 11 is three 100 is four, etc. On a keyboard, all letters and symbols and numbers have a special code of numbers, called ASCII. One can send a letter or series of letters (words) by ASCII numbers between programs, and between machines. The ASCII numbers are in binary form. If you have four binary numbers together, it is a bit. 1001 is nine If you have eight binary numbers together, it is a byte. 01100011 is ninety-nine You can save the bits and bytes on a… [cont.]

How to stop a computer on my home LAN from accessing internet but allow access to other computers on LAN?
Q. I use Windows filesharing and would like to stop one computer on my LAN from accessing anything but other computers on my local network- I do not want it to be able to access the internet. Can anyone recommend how to do this? I would like this to be something configured in Windows itself since I do not want all partitions on the computer to be unable to access the internet. Just one of them.

A. As previous answers have mentioned, you could configure a firewall rule in your router to block that computer from getting to the Internet. If your router doesn't have that functionality, you could configure that computer with bogus / fictitious DNS addresses. Of course, I would suggest using private IP addresses for this. You could log in the computer as administrator to make those changes, and then the person could have a plain user account, and even if they knew what was going on, they couldn't make changes since it's just a user account. That computer would still be able to see the Windows network, because Windows uses net BIOS for that.

A. Even with strong disk wipers, some data can still be recovered with sophisticated software and hardware...but that takes effort. You can go to Filehippo.com and download Recuva under Compression and Backup section and basically recover some of your old data to see what can be recovered with just that program. It's very good recovery software. But, you can also overwrite your data with Recuva for more security. I've used Eraser which can also be found at Filehippo under System Tuning section, to overwrite my data with junk files to help prevent recovery. Read instructions carefully, use with caution. Simple to use, but very powerful. Best recommendation has always been, removed hard drive and destroy. But, that's extreme.

A. Well, for a start, you will be connected to your ISP's server, so you don't want to disconnect that one. If you run MSN Messenger or some of messenger program, that will be maybe another couple of connections. I've just looked on my PC, and I have 60 open connections to other computers. I am not connected to any network, just have my broadband access to my home. If you open a DOS window (Start->Run, type 'cmd' in the box for Windows XP, type 'command' in the box for some older versions of windows.) and type the command "netstat", it will show all open connections. You can also type "netstat 5" to make it refresh every 5 seconds (CTRL-C to stop). These connections are normal. If you shutdown all your internet programs, [cont.]

A. First I'd check with your Internet Provider (who you pay for internet) and see how many connections they allow at once. I used to run with Charter and they only allowed 1 wireless at once, but as many ethernet as we wanted... so we had to ground all but one of our connections.

A. I'm a network engineer with 30 years of experience. The answer is YES. There are parts called blade servers that are designed in this way, but in your case, you are going to have to do it at the software level. Back when Windows NT first came out was a project called CONDOR, which was designed to share resources amoung networked computers. The SETI project also has a screen saver that people can load on their computers that helps them calculate the search for signals from other worlds. This SETI program uses your CPU/Memory power and combines it with others from around the world. You can do the same thing with your OS, but first you are going to have to start with lots of research. The types of hardware you have, CPU, Memory, Mobo, etc.… [cont.]

Are touchscreen computers good or are there many known issues on them?
Q. I am trying to buy a new computer and I was planning on buying a touch screen computer. I don't know much about computers but I just needed for everyday use. Should I buy a touchscreen computer or a regular desktop. Please Help.

A. Get a regular desktop. There's no need for a touchscreen right now unless you are an artist. It may seem cool, and they work just fine, but the experience isn't that great. The entire Windows operating system and all the programs running on it were designed to be used with a mouse and keyboard. As such, it's a bit awkward and inaccurate to try using them with a touchscreen. That's why the i Pad runs the touchscreen-oriented operating system (i OS) instead of Mac OS X, which is also mouse+keyboard oriented.

A. VPN tunnel from network A to network B. Then enable file sharing on the drives or directories you want shared. you most likely will not need any additional hardware. Simply open the ports on your routers, choose a VPN application and you should be able to do this with no problem.
