Civil Society

The term entered public discourse in the United States in the 1980s. The term was however already coined in the 18th century by Adam Ferguson, the "father of modern sociology", and used in the title of his Essay on the History of Civil Society.

Volunteering is often considered a defining characteristic of the organizations that constitute civil society, which in turn are often called NGOs, or NPOs.
