In light of the proliferation of the Internet, are there any BBS still operating?
Q. A BBS (Bulletin Board System) is a computer that other computers would connect to via modem. VBBS and Wildcat were popular types of software to run these communites where users could gather to download files, play games, or socialize before the Internet. I'm curious if any of these are still in operation.

A. Yes. Most of which are run by old hackers who do not post stuff to the net.

Q. HEY! Yeah! So like I got this question for my assignment and I was wondering if any can help me. It said what should be installed first, the systems software or the application software. Can someone help me, I would really like to know.

A. System Software first then application software, the system software (Operating System) is the interface between the application programs and the hardware. You need the OS in place to install the applications software and allow it to interface with the hardware.

Q. Leet originated within bulletin board systems in the 1980s,[1][2] where having "elite" status on a BBS allowed a user access to file folders, games, and special chat rooms, often including archives of pirated software, pornography, or text files documenting topics such as how to construct explosives and manufacture illegal drugs.[3] One theory is that it was developed to defeat text filters created by BBS or Internet Relay Chat system operators for message boards to discourage the discussion of forbidden topics, like cracking and hacking.[1] However, creative misspellings and ASCII-art-derived words were also a way to attempt to indicate one was knowledgeable about the culture of computer users. A. A form of writing whereby some letters in a word are replaced by a numerical likeness or other letters that create an identical or similar sound. This style of writing was originally in use by hackers who were attempting to bypass word-filtering on mail servers. For instance, they would use the term 'haxxorz' to replace 'hackers'. Internet users new to hacking adopted the style in an attempt to emulate those more experienced, and usage became widely spread. In recent times the method is almost never used to avoid word-filtering software, but rather to satirise script kiddies and 12 year olds, or to abbreviate for faster typing. what is the difference between shareware, trialware and a demo software?
Q.
Asked by - Sun Apr 22 05:38:04 2007 - Software - 3 Answers - Comments
A. Demo is usually a cut up software that just presents the capabilities of the application. Trialware - software that works for a certain period of time (trial period), then you have to buy it or uninstall or it just simply stops working. Shareware - software that can be a trialware or demo. It just means that the software is not free and eventually needs to be purchased.

What is the best free software (not demo only!) to use for family tree charting and related genealogical work?
Q. I used smart draw but it's a demo only, I got a pdf print before the expiry but I don't want to do all that work again many times over. I can't really justify paying the $200 for the software when I know freebies are out there. Do any of you genealogists or family research buffs use a decent freeware or shareware program for your graphic tree-charting?

A. There are several that are available. I would avoid the PAF file unless you belong to the LDS Church or intend on becoming a member. There is a lot of things on it that are specific to the Church and have nothing to do with non-LDS genealogical research. You can purchase Family Tree Maker (FTM), Legacy or Roots Magic, which seem to be the current popular ones for less than $40. FMT is affiliated with Ancestry, however, I have found that most serious or professional Genealogists seem to be using Legacy or Roots Magic. Either program cost about the same. I purchased both programs at a Genealogical convention for $10.00 a piece, but I think they are about $30 on line. All three provide about the same charts and are pretty straight forward and… [cont.]

How do you get/buy the rights to use software on various computers?
Q. I am Tech School student in PC Repair/Networking. I am working on starting a business that provides servicing, networking, web design etc. I need to know how you get the rights to use software such as: Microsoft Office, and Vista on multiple systems?? Where can I find online cheaper hardware as well?? Anyone know

A. For all Microsoft products you can purchase the rights to use their software in multiple computers directly from Microsoft's web site. When you have your own business you will likely have a business permit and purchase number that will open the doors to special software licenses from software vendors. With such a license you will also be able to purchase hardware directly from the manufacturers at a low cost.

A. Shareware is software provided to users without cost but usually on a trial basis. In some terms of the usage the shareware will expire after x-amt of time has passed. In other instances I've seen the shareware software continue to function forever but with certain features turned off until you pay for the software. Freeware is software that is available totally free. Sometimes the person who wrote it will provide a link for you to donate. Open source software is software that is available for users to edit and change the software by way of the source code that comes with the software.

The platform for a game is what system it plays on. I would double check the game on other sites, sometimes amazon will say one thing and send you something totally different, or nothing at all.
