A foundry is a factory that produces metal castings. Metals are cast into shapes by melting them into a liquid, pouring the metal in a mold, and removing the mold material or casting after the metal has solidified as it cools. The most common metals processed are aluminum and cast iron. However, other metals, such as steel, magnesium, copper, tin, and zinc, are also used to produce castings in foundries.

A. All I know is about loggers. It depends on what they do, how they it. My dad was a contract thinner. That is he worked for a mill that would have him go in and "thin" out the trees. he looked for sick, dying trees or for trees that may not have a chance to survive long. He earned about $15 an hour or so. He also did horse logging. I don't know how much he earned there but that is where they used big Clydesdale horses to help move the logs. He also worked with a logging company bumping knots. That is where he would go down the log after it fell (being cut down) and with a chain saw cut off the limbs. I think he earned about $10-20 an hour. Now mind you that is about then to fifteen years ago and in a small community so the salaries… [cont.]

Why do I miss the sound of heavy industry?
Q. I used to work in a aluminium foundry and now work in a small fridge factory and after 4 years of being mad redundant from the foundry I still miss the nose. I fell it is to Quiet. Is this normal and should i try and get back into heavy Industrie. Even though i live in the northwest of england.

A. I worked in heavy industry for years building Bridges Cranes and Boilers etc. you might miss it now probably you miss the pals and work mates and the general banter and good humour that is found in that type of work. On the plus side now that you are away from heavy industry you will have less bother with your hearing through the noise in a foundry . I understand how you feel but think to yourself how lucky you are to be in employment in this area . Anyway all the best to you and I'm sure things will turn out all right in the end.
