A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.

Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first resembling a modern computer were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). The first electronic computers were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PC). Modern computers based on tiny integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age, what most people think of as a "computer", but the embedded computers found in devices ranging from fighter aircraft to industrial robots, digital cameras, and toys are the most numerous.

The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a personal digital assistant to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.

How many computers can be connected to the Internet using a wireless router?
Q. I have a Comcast provided wireless router at home. 4 of us can surf the net with no problems. However a 5ht and a 6th computer cannot be used to connect to the Internet. Is there an upper limit on how many computers can talk to the Internet when one uses a wireless router? Or is there something we are doing that is not right?

A. Depends on the router. Most wireless routers have a setting for the number of IP addresses that the DHCP server will allow at one time.

A. I'm a network engineer with 30 years of experience. The answer is YES. There are parts called blade servers that are designed in this way, but in your case, you are going to have to do it at the software level. Back when Windows NT first came out was a project called CONDOR, which was designed to share resources amoung networked computers. The SETI project also has a screen saver that people can load on their computers that helps them calculate the search for signals from other worlds. This SETI program uses your CPU/Memory power and combines it with others from around the world. You can do the same thing with your OS, but first you are going to have to start with lots of research. The types of hardware you have, CPU, Memory, Mobo,… [cont.]

How do I add more computers to a wireless network?
Q. I have recently moved home to my parents, and can no longer connect to their wireless network. There is a box saying 'attempting to connect' or something, and then I get an error message. I think the problem might be that my sister has got a laptop since I have been away, and so there are currently 4 computers connected to the network. I heard that some networks automatically set a limit of 4 client PCs, so how do I increase this? I think I read something about logging into a router, but cant remember anything more. Incidentally, the wireless box is not physically connected to any of the computers. Hope you guys can help, thanks!

A. your wireless card should scan for a network to connect to you should be able to connect to it then. Find your internet connection and click on it, see what options you have. If you want to clear the list of computers in the DHCP list, which is the deal that automatically gives out ip addresses, just, restart the router that should do it. Then try to connect again. If the number is limited to 4 and your sis ain't around right now, you can take her spot.
