A Bulletin Board System, or BBS, is a computer system running software that allows users to connect and log in to the system using a terminal program. Once logged in, a user can perform functions such as uploading and downloading software and data, reading news and bulletins, and exchanging messages with other users, either through electronic mail or in public message boards. Many BBSes also offer on-line games, in which users can compete with each other, and BBSes with multiple phone lines often provide chat rooms, allowing users to interact with each other. Originally BBSes were accessed only over a phone line using a modem, but by the early 1990s some BBSes allowed access via a Telnet, packet switched network, or packet radio connection. The term "Bulletin Board System" itself is a reference to the traditional cork-and-pin bulletin board often found in entrances of supermarkets, schools, libraries or other public areas where people can post messages, advertisements, or community news. During their heyday from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s, most BBSes were run as a hobby free of charge by the system operator (or "SysOp"), while other BBSes charged their users a subscription fee for access, or were operated by a business as a means of supporting their customers. Bulletin Board Systems were in many ways a precursor to the modern form of the World Wide Web and other aspects of the Internet. Early BBSes were often a local phenomenon, as one had to dial into a BBS with a phone line and would have to pay additional long distance charges for a BBS out of the local calling area. Thus, many users of a given BBS usually lived in the same area, and activities such as BBS Meets or Get Togethers, where everyone from the board would gather and meet face to face, were common. As the use of the Internet became more widespread in the mid to late 1990s, traditional BBSes rapidly faded in popularity. Today, Internet forums occupy much of the same social and technological space as BBSes did, and the term BBS is often used to refer to any online forum or message board. Ward Christensen and the computer that ran the first public Bulletin Board System, CBBSAlthough BBSing survives only as a niche hobby in most parts of the world, it is still an extremely popular form of communication for Taiwanese youth (see PTT Bulletin Board System). Most BBSes are now accessible over telnet and typically offer free email accounts, FTP services, IRC chat and all of the protocols commonly used on the Internet. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License bulletin board system for a small company...? Q. I am looking for a website that like a bulletin board for few of my staffs can log in and put note and share the progress. Basically each of them will have their own log in, so whoever log in can see other staffs' note. Is any website host that, I don't mind to pay for the service. Asked by Sisley W - Sun Oct 5 22:51:52 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hostamina.com would allow you to easily/instantly create a bulletin board system like what you need. They will help you do it if you have any trouble at all, but it's very simple. You should avoid hosts that offer "unlimited" space/bandwidth as this is somewhat of a scam. You should also avoid hosts that offer ridiculous amounts of space/bandwidth, such as 10GB space for only $5/month. Hosts like this overload and oversell servers, and are bad news for anyone who wants reliability. You should also avoid answers here that send you to review sites, as those sites make money off commissions and rank hosts based on how much money they'll get paid, not on how good they are. You should avoid answers here that look like they are affiliate links… [cont.] Answered by John F - Mon Oct 6 05:03:45 2008 In light of the proliferation of the Internet, are there any BBS still operating? Q. A BBS (Bulletin Board System) is a computer that other computers would connect to via modem. VBBS and Wildcat were popular types of software to run these communites where users could gather to download files, play games, or socialize before the Internet. I'm curious if any of these are still in operation. Asked by PartyCrasher - Wed Dec 21 13:02:59 2005 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes. Most of which are run by old hackers who do not post stuff to the net. Answered by Richard - Wed Dec 21 13:23:33 2005 What kind of laptop should I buy for word processing, loading AOL, and possibly loading Star Wars Galaxies?
Q. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. I'm trying not to spend a whole lot. Ideally, I'd like it mainly for two things: Word2000 (for word processing) and AOL (so I can check my email). I might like to load Star Wars Galaxies on it if the system requirements don't drive the laptop out of my price range. But I don't even know what the system requirements for SWG are. I tried looking it up on the internet, but I couldn't find it anywhere. What kind of CPU does SWG require? Is a CPU the processor? I think I found on one bulletin board that somebody said SWG requires a 933 Mhz processor, but that they recommend a 1 Ghz processor. What kind of acceleration card does SWG require? What is the minimum RAM for SWG? What kind of API would… [cont.] Asked by CuriousRob - Sun Sep 3 21:26:16 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. A mac wont work, laptops are expensive in there own right.
