From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The term shareware, popularized by Bob Wallace, refers to proprietary software that is provided to users without payment on a trial basis and is often limited by any combination of functionality, availability or convenience. Shareware is often offered as a download from an Internet website or as a compact disc included with a periodical such as a newspaper or magazine. The rationale behind shareware is to give buyers the opportunity to use the program and judge its usefulness before purchasing a license for the full version of the software. Shareware is usually offered as a trial version with certain features only available after the license is purchased, or as a full version, but for a trial period. Once the trial period has passed the program may stop running until a license is purchased. Shareware is often offered without support, updates, or help menus, which only become available with the purchase of a license. The words "free trial" or "trial version" are indicative of shareware. The term shareware is used in contrast to retail software, which refers to commercial software available only with the purchase of a license which may not be copied for others, public domain software, which refers to software not copyright protected, and freeware, which refers to copyrighted software for which the author solicits no payment (though he or she may request donations). Also, which one is better and why? Asked by Miss P - Sat Dec 22 18:13:00 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Freeware, as the name suggests, is free and doesn't cost anything. When you install shareware, there is normally a time period after which the program will only run with limited functionality / won't run at all / will start blending annoying adverts in / will take a long time to start / will generally annoy or badger you into buying the full version. Sometimes there is even a clause in the small print which states that if you don't unregister the software after the free trial period has run out, then you are liable for the cost of the program. I generally tend to avoid shareware and go for freeware or open-source programs. Answered by Terry Rumble - Sat Dec 22 18:23:22 2007 How to reverse-engineer shareware where should i look??
Q. I want to be able to reverse-engineer shareware software & i need a mentor to teach me the basics. I'm really willing to learn. Where should i look?? i have the executable files - i was trying to reverse-engineer 'crack-me's i donwloaded from the internet using SoftIce and Win32ASM but it seems i don't understand a thing and these programs aren't exactly ''user friendly'' Asked by GA1985 - Wed Nov 1 12:42:23 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is not as easy as it sounds usually, especially these days of internet. Twenty or thirty years ago, programs (executales, EXE files) were built using a compiled language, like FORTRAN, COBOL, BAsic or others. These essentially were compiled or converted into a machine code or object language that the computer could recognize, and then into specific instructons that the specific computer could read. The advantage of doing this souce code is to be able to create some human interpreted logic. If I wrote in FORTRAN: SALES=0 START: SUM=SALES+1 write 6, SALES, sum goto start you could understand this as adding 1 to a number and printing out the sum. In machine code, this could be readable yet, but the variables SALES and SUM… [cont.] Answered by torskie - Wed Nov 1 12:50:34 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "shareware" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
